So sorry to hear that you lost your Ben
I had a beautiful companion Bobi who we lost on the 19 th of November last year. Bobi was with me for 12 years and I miss her. My son who had never known life without Bobi constantly asks about her lately. I think he is finding it very hard to accept that she will not be coming home. Always sad to have to say good bye to one of our four legged friends. I know he misses her very much and I hope you find some comfort in knowing that he is running with the spirits of the land and pain free now.

How sad for you, but how wonderful that he was your friend for so long.  You will always have your memories.  Great post.

So, I'm a big baby and couldn't stop the tears at the end
of this story, remembering the loss of good four-leggeds whose time came too soon.  I'm so sorry your friend is gone. Obits for a loved one are the hardest writing, and this was beautifully done.

Thanks for understanding, Nautikos
And I believe you about the cat. My sister had one who would 'bark' at flies - she picked it up from a neighbour's poodle. It was quite funny to watch!

Corbin Dallas - what a beautiful thing you have shared!
I have never heard of the Rainbow Bridge. This made me cry all over again, but with healing this time. I'm going to copy and post it on my family blog so that others who knew & loved Ben can read it too. Thank you - it was so kind and thoughtful of you to share this.

I'm so sorry! It's terribly sad to lose a member of the family, and that's what our pets are! We have several dogs in our extended family, they often move around between houses for various reasons (people travelling, mostly) and are happy wherever they are.

Recently we lost one of them, Ozzie, a gentle German Shepherd who was 14, and who had lost the use of his hind legs. The tears were flowing when we said goodbye. My daughter, who was the 'owner', can't bring herself yet to get another doggie, but then she has her cats...

And here's something really strange: Ozzie, gentle and peaceful as he was, didn't like squirrels, and used to bark at them. One of my daughter's cats has picked up a weird, very uncat-like 'woo-woo' sound from Ozzie, when ever she sees a squirrel...I've heard it myself...

So sorry on your loss......
only dog lovers can understand the bond between "family" members........but the pain is over and someday you'll see Ben again at the Rainbow Bridge...................

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

I really understand your lost. Only people who have dogs can understand how painful it is to loose such a friend. They really are part of our family. I'm sure he is now peacefully sleeping at "home".
