Chyrlann, sorry to hear about your flu, especially annoying over Christmas! I've had mine also, but it ended a few days before Christmas...Hope you feel better...

Re: How, exactly, does generalizing the season prevent Christians

Ciel, as you probably know, I am an agnostic and have no ‘personal’ stake in the matter, as it were. I also have no problem whatsoever with anyone celebrating whatever they wish, at any time they wish. Diversity is wonderful and interesting.  What I object to, on principle, is the deliberate suppression of the Christian tradition in many areas, and in the name of tolerance, especially when tolerance is not demanded of those from different traditions.

There has never been a culture in history that is as timid and self-effacing as our Western culture has become over the last few decades (and I am speaking of Western Europe and North America.) Political Correctness holds sway, and the whole Christmas thing is part of it.

I have posted on that before, and may well do so again, once I get done with the Religion thing, which is like sticky tape, I can’t get it off my hands...

Re: Nautikos
Happy wrapping, Krisles. Actually, to me that's an oxymoron, but apparently not to all...

How, exactly, does generalizing the season prevent Christians

from celebrating fully?  What is this notion that in a diverse world, only Christians get to own the season?  It has belonged to other faiths for generation longer than Christians have even existed, as solstice, as Saturnalia, as the Festival of Lights...

By all means, shout Merry Christmas from every belfry, but expect to hear other voices answering with other greetings, all for a good time, for tolerance, charity, and joy.

Maybe there's hope for Europe yet! Here in Toronto we have the same PC problem they have in LA, the only difference is that it's colder here! And a GOD JUL to you and your family!

GOD JUL
We still say MERRY CHRISTMAS or its equivalent in Europe. I was in Los Angeles just before Christmas 2 years ago and I remember wondering why all the banners in shops were saying HAPPY HOLIDAY instead.
