I'm with ya...
How big an issue is it that we have to have Portugese instructions?  Hey all arline pilots and air traffic controllers speak english, what does that tell you?  I would love to be bi-lingual (that way I could truly speak out of the other side of my mouth) but I would probably choose something like, oh I don't know, Portugese?  Mostly I am try lingual.

Wow. I LOVE reading those things.
I read them out loud first in english, then in spanish, then in french or whatever language happens to be on it.   I like comparing the difference in the words and the way that they feel on my tongue.    (I have been this way ever since I was a little kid, though).   It all depends on how you look at it.     It's all in your perception and perpective, I guess.

Apparently I'm a cranky racist

We need to pick a language. If it's racist to say that it should be English, then fine, pick something else, but we really need to get on the same page. There's nothing wrong with being bilingual, obviously, but if you have to be bilingual then there's a problem. Sometimes it seems like we're more interested in being esoteric than in being able to communicate with one another. I have a problem with being hyphen-nation.

Scriber then there is the matter of highway signs.
Can you imagine how crazy it will be when signs are posted in multi-languages!?  What a mess that's gonna be.  I better go buy a GPS system now.

Illegal immigrants should not be allowed in the country if they can't
speak English.  Seriously, it is a problem, probably won't get better as you hinted.

Billy It is predicted by the year 2012

35% of the US population will be of the Spanish dialect.  I have been learning a little here n there most of my life.  My father is bi-lingual, and to hear him speaking Spanish is to hear a melody.

You are right.  All of us should be taught the language.  Thanks for visiting and commenting... lover mysteria

I'm not big on accomodating illegal immigrants but I think we
should all learn spanish from an early age.

Thanks for your comments.  I always love to hear your view.  There are so many smart and logical people here.  That is one of the great things about Blogit. You can voice yourself and or frustrations and get instant gratification in the form of feedback.  Maybe my frustration is my unconscious way of telling me that i do need to get with the now.  It is work, so perhaps that is why i am a bit bent against it.  It does help to write the junk out.  That way I can clear room for some good stuff... gracious love mysteria

i know, i am confused on the issue, i am of many different ethnicities myself, and surely a hypocrite, like all of us are. Hypocrasy to me is a good thing as long as one can learn from it.  I am lucky in that I can.  Thanks for reading and your comments.  lover mysteria

i understand your frustration.  It's not easy to sift through all this stuff.  Sorry it gets under your lovely skin. I have seen the ill effects of bilingual education on young people in the big city.  But on the other hand, it's so great to know more than one language -- most western democracies require their students to learn a foreign language, usually English, and since American Culture is so Dominant Global, most of the rest of the world has to have some knowledge of English. Children are very capable of learning more than one langauge from birth and this should be nurtured. Our language is also enriched by foreign culture -- ever eat a bagel off the dollar menu? That's yiddish, German, and French.   So the"English Only" movement falls a bit flat on its derrier.

But I still feel for you, love, and wish you patience. tg

I understand where you are coming from

But my wife, who is Mexican and speaks Spanish, likes the fact that we have lots of things bilingual now. Not for herself, as she speaks English. But she also knows many who do not. One thing I am not for, is being forced to make it one of our "official" languages. I don't mind having the convenience of bi-lingual instructions or whatever. But English is my language, and I would like to see immigrants make an effort to learn it.
