The Jesus Prayer

"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner." This is the Jesus Prayer. If you are not familiar with it, read The Way of a Pilgrim, an anonymous narration of a Russian peasant's experience in praying unceasingly, as St. Paul asks us to do in 1 Thessolonians. His spiritual transformation and how it affects those around him (to quote St. Seraphim of Sarov - "Aquire the spirit of peace and a thousand souls around you will be saved") is an amazing story. I began saying a shorter... Sign in to see full entry.

Wars in the Name of Religion

I woke up this morning thinking about peace. I guess it was in my head because of the news this morning about Condolisa Rice trying jumpstart the Mideast peace process by talking with Israel and Palestine, but not wanting to engage Iran and Syria to help in bringing peace to Iraq. That got me thinking about all of wars currently in the world, and how many of them are religiously based. Below are the current conflicts in the world, the main religious groups involved and the type of conflict.... Sign in to see full entry.

The Souless Entity that is American Business

It's been a rough week and a half (hence, no posts). I had to spend last week preparing for and then telling a member of my staff that their job had been eliminated. We layed off 32 people and, like the other times I've had to do this with other companies, it was an incredibly bad process. This whole process seemed to be done with little in the way of compassion. All managers were forbidden from telling our employees prior to Friday, though we have all known for a couple of weeks. For some of... Sign in to see full entry.

Giving is Love Made Tangible

Now that times have slowed down at Hotel Sannhet, my muse and I conspired to write the following: They see their brother in a doorway. They know him not, at least not that way. His hand is out; there are no words. He’s all alone; cut from the herd. His condition is made up of three: Empty hand, stomach, and soul do plea. "Please help me out, I’ve lost my way. A dollar would build a gracious day." Says one out loud, "I cannot give To one like that; not how he lives. I can’t be sure that he won’t... Sign in to see full entry.

If Humility Stumbles, Humanity Fails

I hope this verse works. I don't think my muse and I were quite in sync today: Ego rises with each Sun, Assured the battle is already won. Humility awakens too, Though battle is not what he wants to do. Ego’s motto: Carpe Diem. For Humility it’s do not condemn, Both move forward through the day; One is modest; the other hunting prey. Ego boasts of each conquest. Sometimes with viciousness; sometimes in jest. The humble one sees what’s done; This constant winning seems like so much fun. Power is... Sign in to see full entry.

When Man Forgives, God Forgets

One slapped his cheek, One struck his arm. He spoke to each with sublime charm. One spat on him, So out of place. He looked at each with loving grace. He smiled at them With no regrets When Man forgives, God forgets. Sign in to see full entry.

Understand Your Heart

Many toil for years trying to understand Man. Few succeed. Many toil for years trying to understand God. Fewer still succeed. Toil not on God nor Man, but on your heart. Your heart holds the Truth; your heart shares the truth. Understand your heart and you will understand everything. Sign in to see full entry.

From One Dream To Another

I thought I might begin to share some of my attempts at verse again - The morning comes and I awake, From one dream to another. The dreams I have are far from fake; These dreams now shared with others. These daily dreams in our one mind Cajole us to laugh or weep. Enjoy them all for you will find, Each one in the final sleep. When I Say I am a Christian

I was sent this poem by a friend, and really enjoyed it. I thought I'd share it with all of you. by Carol Wimmer When I say..."I am a Christian" I'm not shouting "I am saved" I'm whispering "I get lost!" "That is why I chose this way." When I say..."I am a Christian" don't speak of this with pride. I'm confessing that I stumble and need someone to be my guide. When I say..."I am a Christian" I'm not trying to be strong. I'm professing that I'm weak and pray for strength to carry on. When I... Sign in to see full entry.

The Cycle of Life and Death is Ongoing

Here it is. The end of the first story of Lanny and Death. In the previous installment, Lanny (now Death) had beaten an attractive woman at Texas Hold 'Em and had handed her his card. In order to not get confused since it has been a while, you may want to go back and read the previous three installments (starting on Nov. 20th). It will help you to understand this last installment. She awoke with a start. Breathing heavily, and with sweat rolling down her face, it took her a moment to realize... Sign in to see full entry.
