The Departed

I’m not sure what I think of this movie. Maybe the expectations were high owing to the talent that was involved and maybe that was the issue. My focus tended to be on the identity of the actors and how they played off against each other rather than immersion in the characters and the story itself.... Sign in to see full entry.

Crash (DVD)

For some reason I didn't see this movie when it was first released. Somewhere along the line I had the mistaken idea that it was a movie about drugs. It isn't. This movie is concerned with an LA society where individuals are trapped in isolated, aggravated existences. Characters are angry without... Sign in to see full entry.

World Trade Centre

There were elements of this movie which worked and some which either fell flat or really jarred. In the choice between presenting the big picture or focusing on the story of a few individuals, Stone has opted for the individual story of two cops who were trapped beneath the rubble of the World Trade... Fun With Dick and Jane (DVD)

Alec Baldwin is in this film, what more can I say? I really enjoyed this movie. Jim Carey and Tea Leoni are a great screen couple: frantic in their success and out of control in their failure. I admit I have to be in the right mood for Jim Carey but I was definetly in the mood today. Dick Harper... Sign in to see full entry.

The History of Violence (DVD)

This is a thought provoking movie. It begins with a clear-cut moral landscape: there are bad men who randomly kill people including a little girl and there are good, small town people who own small businesses and have bright and cheery sex. Inevitably the bad men enter the small town looking for... Sign in to see full entry.

House (Seasons 1 & 2)

I used to save my rotten old vegetables to throw at fellow hospital workers who spent their after work hours watching hospital television dramas. "You ludicrous fools," I'd mutter as I'd throw an old cabbage at a nurse as she pushed a patient off to surgery. "A pox on your head," I'd bellow at a... Sign in to see full entry.

United 93

I was in two minds about seeing this film. It's natural to wonder about the reasoning or motivation behind movies that are based on historical realities. Where such a reality is used for some kind of formulaic, money driven Hollywood Blockbuster then the result is little more than crass... Sign in to see full entry.

The Weatherman

There's been a stream of films over the past few years, beginning with American Beauty, which might best be described of dysfunctional genre movies. These films explore the mundane, the banal, broken relationships and habitual miscommunication within suburban settings. Sometimes these movies manage... Sign in to see full entry.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest

Here is a sequel that maintains the qualities of the original, namely a quirky fun script, an interesting mixture of characters, a sample of the spookily metaphysical and plenty of clever sight gags. This movie is great fun. Johnny Depp once again fills the screen with the heavily intoxicated,... Sign in to see full entry.

Superman Returns (Beware: Plot Twists Are Revealed)

This film belongs in the category of JUST OK. I mean what interesting things can you really do with a man in tights who fixes up bad stuff and only comes undone in the presence of kryptonite. Well you can have him disappear for five years after a quick fling only to have him return and find out he's... Sign in to see full entry.
