Prompted by title: Who in Hell...

Oh, brother, this is a loaded one. I have a whole lot of hunches as to who I think is in Hell (the Christian version, that is), but I'm unwilling to say just what those hunches are. Since this blog seems to be staying at the top of the New Posts heap for a while, I'd like people to think about this... Sign in to see full entry.

Net filtering software ought to be itself banned

This, to me, is the worst thing in the world schools and communities at large can do for kids. Why? I feel kids get cheated out of legitimate research opportunities just because we are afraid of being offended. Let us suppose that my daughter wishes to go to the local public library to research... Well, gooooleee, to quote Gomer Pyle

This is another one of those people about whose writings I can offer an opinion without necessarily reviewing anything currently available. David Icke produces writings that I would call "a hoot and a half," if the material published on his website is any indication. Certain portions of the... Sign in to see full entry.

Immunizations can be a dicey topic

Talk with your doctor first if your immune system or that of your child is weak. It might save a life. I have previously written an editorial advising adults to get immunized against certain diseases - especially tetanus and the flu, but others as well. Having given that advice, I wanted to make... One ambidexterous mouse, please

We need more left-handed mice! As a devout southpaw, with no desire to change at my age, I find it hard to use a lot of computer equipment because it's oriented toward righties. (For those of you who come from Europe or other parts of the world, a "southpaw" is a lefthanded person; the term comes... Sign in to see full entry.

A miscarriage is just like the death of an already-born baby

If you know someone who has recently miscarried, they have just lost a loved one. Offer them condolences and sympathy. I think that this is the most important thing to remember for loved ones of those who have had a miscarriage. Those who have had miscarriages generally know they have had a... No man is an island

Our responsibility as writers - and therefore as artists - is to make sure we have our facts straight before we start typing. There is no such thing as the right to cry "fire" in a crowded theater if you know there is none. Similarly, there is no such thing as an artist who is entirely free from... Be careful what you pray for

You may just get it. The secular version is "Be careful what you wish for - you may just get it." In other words, people often get what is not in their best interests, and they realize it only when they get it. Just something to think about. Sign in to see full entry.

Someone else I'd like to read as much of as possible

While copying and pasting my editorial on Constance Cumbey, I realized that there is another author I have been consistently impressed with over the years - Eugenia Price. Many of you might be familiar with Price's historical fiction. This was actually the result of a fortuitous career move on her... Sign in to see full entry.

Going to college isn't babe-magnet time

Be picky, picky, picky and remember that you aren't there to get your MRS degree. One of the worst things you can do is to choose a college or university based on the "babe magnet" factor - meaning that one shouldn't be choosing on the basis of the number of good-looking members of one's gender of... One best war film (actually an anti-war film)

There are films out there that do a better job than WIZARDS at telling us that "war is hell" without pushing any other views that might be offensive. I agree with someone else on another website that the film WIZARDS, an art film animated by Ralph Bakshi, is indeed an anti-war film. The film is... Sign in to see full entry.

Trade Schools and Junior Colleges

Junior and community colleges offer programs that aren't always available at the average four-year degree-granting institutions. Yes, community colleges offer degrees called associate degrees, but that's not all. If you happen to have one handy, explore some of their career-certification options;... Sign in to see full entry.

Preparation for life after college? What's that?

Not every college graduate is truly prepared to deal with real life, which tends to just happen. I spent four years supposedly preparing for the real world. I got a dose of real-world smarts two weeks after graduation, and I didn't need the BA degree I got for the trouble, either. There are simply... Sign in to see full entry.

Marketing our sites.

There are those of us who are fearful of aggressively promoting our sites due to unwanted experience with other sites. Let's face it - marketing is not my strong suit. In fact, my idea of "marketing" is what they used to call it in the 1950s - it's an old-fashioned term for going to the supermarket... Sign in to see full entry.

It's too easy for college kids to get credit.

It is indeed too easy for college kids to get credit cards. It was also too easy for scam artists to come onto my college campus and offer us less-than-satisfactory goods on the installment plan, mixing up "buy this now - it's easy" with "you need to break free from your parents." (We actually did... Sign in to see full entry.

Vaccinations aren't just for wee tykes

Adults need to get vaccinated every so often, so set an example for your little ones and get that tetanus shot already. Many of us think of vaccination as being something only for children. Guess what? It isn't. You know that flu shot people get every year? That's a vaccination, against the strains... Sign in to see full entry.

Animation for adults

Think before you watch animation - most of it is adult-oriented in the library sense. Most animation is actually made for adults, or at least most good animation is adult-oriented. Think of it. Specifically, think of the themes of many - believe it or not - Disney movies in particular. The way they... Sign in to see full entry.

Why not develop your own list for a change?

(This originally ended up on Epinions.com when Oprah Winfrey still had her book club up and running. She has since discontinued it, and I feel that one of the reasons why she did so was due to Jonathan Franzen's open dislike of the Book Club seal that went on the book that was originally selected... Anyone got a cookie cutter handy?

Danielle Steel tends to focus on producing large amounts of material and the quality of her work suffers as a result. (Sound familiar? Think maybe that last remark might apply to this author AKA yours truly?) Danielle Steel has a habit of writing her life twenty times over. What I mean is that if... Sign in to see full entry.

Really dumb migrated material

This may strike some as being a bit dumb, but believe it or not, it's not something everyone thinks of. It may not even be that widely known a fact. I first started noticing a problem along these lines when I noticed that I wasn't retaining as much fluid when I used regular toothpaste as when I used... Sign in to see full entry.

Fido and fluffy and veterinary care

Veterinary care is simply medical care for your fine furry friends, be they canine or feline. This is the essence of my editorial. Anyone who has watched the program EMERGENCY VETS on Animal Planet knows that veterinary medicine has progressed from merely putting a sick animal down to reviving... Sign in to see full entry.

Ah, Spot, how do I love thee?

I am a real fan of the spot-application forms of pest control. First of all, all the best ones are prescription-only, meaning that one has to go to one's veterinarian and ask him about getting them. This is actually a good thing, as the vets I deal with are less likely to be manipulated into giving... Sign in to see full entry.

I like it, I really like it

I like the proposal for the VAT-style national sales tax for one simple reason: it's much fairer in the long run than the current setup. The reason why it's much fairer than the current setup is that we all eat. Yes, the rich person probably buys different things than what the poor person might buy,... Sign in to see full entry.

Comments inspired by Whim's latest blog

Whim's latest blog is an attempt to point out some of the better and some of the worse blogs on deck here at The Blogging Network. Frankly, I don't expect that this blog will make it into the "best" category, for a very good reason. Much of the work I put on this blog is from the old days at... Sign in to see full entry.

I wish we could go back to being cash-only

The title of this review is an excellent summary of my opinion - I really do wish we could go back to being a cash-only society. No, I don't mean we should stuff a suitcase full of hundreds whenever we go to pay for a house, or hand our favorite auto dealer an envelope full of twenties when we... Sign in to see full entry.

Take me back to the good old days - of MTV, in 1981

I am of the opinion that MTV should be showing more videos. I ought to know - I have a teenager in the house, and she watches a lot of MTV. Much of the programming borders on softcore porn, and of course I do make her flip off that. (Of course, this is the same child that runs screaming from the... Sign in to see full entry.

This editorial was originally posted on Epinions.com, but I decided to move it over here to see to it that it continued to make me some money (which I happen to enjoy getting every once in a while).
