Do you ever get the feeling that you just can’t win?

I’ve spent most of the weekend, measuring distances between my eyes and the top of my monitor, which should be approximately 2 to 3 inches. By the same token, the distance between me and the monitor should be approximately arms length. Don’t you just love the word ‘approximately?’ It is akin to a... Sign in to see full entry.

It began innocently enough….

…at the beginning of the year. A woman who attends the same church approached Ell and myself. “You used to work in the printing industry, didn’t you Ell?’ “In one of my earlier lives.” she answered, “before my electronic era.” The lady turned to me, “I loved your articles in the local paper.” Ell... Imagine a world where animals mutate to survive...

..much like the world we inhabit, as it happens. Now imagine me driving along a highway on Sunday morning, letting my mind float free. First of all there is a pub on the right hand side of the road that backs on to the river. The car park goes all the way around the pub, and at night, if you didn’t... Sign in to see full entry.

“You will have to stop being a pussycat, John MacNab,”

Ell’s friend berated me as soon as she sat down at the table. “You ordered an egg and bacon sandwich, didn’t you? You always order an egg and bacon sandwich. You paid for an egg and bacon sandwich. You should go back up there and demand service. All that’s going to happen now that you have a... Sign in to see full entry.

“There goes the neighbourhood,”

Ell moaned as the 4 police cars screamed to a halt outside our front door – 2 on this side of the road and 2 on the opposite side, and the officers converged on the front door of the cottage across the street, giving their holsters a comforting pat. As the woman in the Tudor style house, next to the... Sign in to see full entry.

We were still Beavering away during the first week of November…

..when Ell wanted plants dug up and dried out before filling the spare bedroom with them. At last I understood why she had been collecting the paper bags we buy bread in – now they were filled with plants that couldn’t stand the Canadian winter. Idea! Why don’t I buy myself a little brown paper bag?... Sign in to see full entry.

Before the Snow Flies…

…..is a much better name for Fall. At the end of October we worked like beavers. We have a small part outside the back of the house which is almost completely fenced in and is floored with gravel. It is where Ell used to keep her dogs before she could afford the couple of thousand bucks to fence in... Sign in to see full entry.

“What’s a Tesla?” I asked

The new casino, Niagara Fallsview, was incredible. Before we entered, we passed a stretch limo with eight windows per side. An extended family could have lived in it, and for all I know were living in it, without getting on each others nerves. There could have been a rave going on inside and nobody... Yesterday I became faint from learning new things

It started when I went to a shopping mall I rarely frequent. After discovering the bank’s ATM machine was out of action, I asked a young girl in a gift shop if there was another one in the mall. “There is one upstairs, but you don’t want to use that. It costs $2.00. Give me your card and I’ll do it... Sign in to see full entry.

Nothing much has changed in the last 25 days.

It is 8.39 on Sunday morning and the world looks marvellous again; I haven’t been quite with it for a few weeks what with migraines and other ailments, but today I feel lucid. The roofs and cars are frost covered and the river is steaming like an immense bowl of warm water. I can barely see the tops... Sign in to see full entry.
