Where have I been?
In a listless limbo where time evaporates faster than gas on a hot pavement? In a world where nothing I say or do matters, so why make any effort? I don’t know! I do know that my psyche has been flirting with the Slough of Despond; if you tune in you can hear the sucking sound it makes as it heaves...

From a happy Canada Day, best wishes for a happy Independence Day
This is Canada’s 142nd Anniversary of Confederation. In 1867 Canada became a Nation. On July 4th, America will celebrate the 233rd Signing of the Declaration of Independence. In 1776 America became a Nation. Happy Birthday to both of us.

A Speeling Mistake – or too?
I looked across at the yellow signpost on the right hand side of the road. It was one of these signs that are looked after by a religious order, or a volunteer group, where the message is changed every two weeks. The black letters are slid in between grooves and deliver a powerful homily to the...

French Canadiens Boo the American Anthem
I found the occasion distressing. Ell was trying to explain to me why she refused to support the Montréal Canadien ice hockey team after her own team had been put out of the Stanley Cup playoffs. “So you’ll be supporting the Habs,” I’d said. “Never! You’ve seen how they play. They are dirty,...

Water fountain man gets his comeuppance, or does he?
Today it was raining heavily first thing in the morning. The lack of tennis playing didn’t bother me unduly, as I’d already made arrangements to have a full body assessment from a professional trainer. I need to build up and to do so I need to know how. I need more building up than I thought, as the...

I was deliberately ignored today - twice.
The first time was endearing; the second time was insulting. The original ignoring was caused by our neighbour’s Doberman; let’s call him Dobby. Our neighbour’s back deck overlooks ours and is about 10 yards away. Dobby has a habit of barking for attention when either Ell or I go out onto our back...

Tag Sale
Ell made up her mind to go to the tag sale because the auctioneer at the Good Friday auction had taken her aside and extolled on the collection of jewellery that would be available. “The old lady is moving to an apartment and is selling her house. Not only is she selling her own jewellery but she is...

Susan Boyle! “She comes fae Blackburn?”
It was her accent that got to us first, and her self denigrating humour. Ell and I both sat up straight when we heard her. She wasn’t using the put-on Highland accent of TV commercials. There was none of Edinburgh’s prissy Morningside accent, and none of the faux accent of Glasgow’s Kelvingrove. She...

Italian Earthquake – Korean Missile?
A word of advice; don’t try to sleep with those two facts floating about in your head. The facts tend to split into ‘what ifs’ and make nodding off very difficult, especially when you have a dam upriver of your house. The news flash about the Italian earthquake was the last piece of information I...

Canada? ‘Isn’t this the perfect time to invade this ridiculous country?
They have no army' …suggested Greg Gutfeld on ‘Red Eye with Greg’ on Fox news. "Once their Afghan mission winds down sometime in 2011, certain members of the Canadian military are looking to take a much-deserved break. And by certain members I mean all of them," Gutfeld said. “Meaning, the Canadian...
