Always be ready

This morning as the sun was ready to thrust above the horizon and reveal our new mantle of snow, the clouds were also parting and the mists rising in the valleys. These scenes do not last long so I grabbed the trusty camera and snapped away. There is nothing really technical about these shots, I... Sign in to see full entry.

Photos like songs

I looked out the window and the line of the sun was crawling across the valley floor. As I looked at the shadow transitioning to brightness it put me in mind of the Doors classic song, "Waiting for the sun." Then I went out onto the front porch and the scene 180 degrees from the field brought... Sign in to see full entry.

Make a mountain out of a molehill.

I could tell you I took this photo while flying over the mountains and you might even believe it. If you do think that is a high mountain peak, then I have some ocean front property in Arizona that you might be interested in. All right, it does look a little like a mountain peak viewed from an... Painting with light.

That's how a photography instructor once described this thing we do with cameras. Yesterday I took a few close-ups of the pink African Violet we have. Today, the sun blasted in the window and begged me to try a few more. So, first one with the available room light from yesterday. Now, one from today... Sign in to see full entry.

Macro gets you close.

The close-up was how we used to refer to pictures taken as close as the camera would focus. Now they like to call it Macro. I’m not sure of the technical aspects involved but usually the macro setting allows the lens to nearly touch the subject. The other thing is, in macro you focus by moving the... A steady hand is in the bag.

One of the first tools most photographers want, indeed, need is a tripod. Tripods are handy not for just getting yourself into the occasional family shot, but to make most pictures crisp and clear. The most frequent bugaboo of the shutterbug is the blurry photo due to camera shake. The darker it is... Sign in to see full entry.

Take the same picture again.

Often, opportunities arise that at first might not grab one's imagination. I was looking out the same window I had taken a picture out of earlier this fall with the sun illuminating the last fall leaves of the birch tree outside. Yesterday, the tree was lit up again by the late afternoon sun, only... Sign in to see full entry.

Just for fun

Ok, sometimes when I am putting a title on a photo, something pops into my head. Such was the case Friday when it was snowing like crazy. I took this photo and then the title just appeared in my brain, I guess that's what happened. Oh, the title? Brrrrrrd house! Sign in to see full entry.

Look out your window

Oddly enough, quite a few photo opportunities lie right outside your house. Today I was marveling at the big flakes pelting down from the sky. I wondered how that would translate to a photo, so I snapped a few. To be sure, they weren't at all impressive in the little 2.5 inch view screen on back of... Sign in to see full entry.

More road trip.

One usually has to be very high up on a ski hill to see trees laden with snow in bright sunshine. The other day we were early enough, and it was cold enough the snow stayed on the trees all day. So without further ado, here are some snow laden trees. The first ones were right along the road. The... Sign in to see full entry.
