Break the rules
I took this picture from the back seat of a Jeep, the window was dirty and it is really hard to get out of those things. So the key here is to get the lens as close to the window as possible, the dirt won't be in focus. I also liked the added elements in the foreground, gives a depth to the photo... Cropping with a zoom lens
Often, a picture will have elements that you want to change. One way to do that is to zoom in or out on the subject to change how the picture looks. You can also do this by walking nearer or farther from the subject but that takes time and is sometimes impossible, say at the rim of the Grand Canyon.... Sign in to see full entry.

Stop what you are doing.
It was late afternoon and I was midway through a painting project. I looked up to see the valley bathed in that great light that comes near the end of the day. So I took off my protective gear, went inside and got the camera just to take this photo. I cheated, you can't see the fence or my driveway... Sign in to see full entry.

Scenes
Photos of scenery don't always have to be a sweeping panorama. Sometimes an odd stump sticking out of the water casting its reflection onto calm waters can make shapes that border on the surreal or suggest ancient sea creatures lying in wait. Sign in to see full entry.

Now any one who shoots digital has the darkroom either right in the camera or else on their computer. I recently took this shot of a lake close to sundown, the surface was fairly... Zoom in on the action...
Recently an opportunity came along, I had my camera and the zoom lens was already on. A Moose and her calf appeared some distance off the roadway and my brother-in-law stopped as quick as he could and backed up for a good angle. The first shot shows the mother fine, but junior is almost hidden in... Sign in to see full entry.

A word or two on using a flash...
The built-in flash on most cameras is why you see a lot of re-eye. The flash is so close to the plane of the lens the light is reflected back into the camera. That is why those obnoxious bulky looking accessory units work better. Use one that is made to work with your camera, the dedicated... Sign in to see full entry.

Photo editing
Sometimes you will have a picture that has an element that could be improved or removed altogether. For instance, I recently took this photo of a young lady that had graduated veterinarian school. I liked her facial expression in this shot and I decided to crop it so I had just her. But then when I... Sign in to see full entry.

Cameras were made for babies
The joy of being a grandparent is you have a lot of time and patience. So I was relaxing with my wife and the grandbaby when of course, out came the camera. I took lots of photos, lots of photos which was good, babies are notorious for moving when you don't want them to. In the end I was able to... Sign in to see full entry.
