My Favorite Martian is a Microbe?

It seems there is water on Mars, some in ice, possibly some water vapor, and maybe even some water in the soil. Is this enough to support life? Will we find microbes, or viruses? What did we learn?

Has anyone seen any news items regarding what, if anything, new we learned during Mars' close approach to the Earth?
