the bad words

First of all, words are not bad. It takes emotional filters to make them seem bad. It takes intent on the part of the speaker, even of the listener, to make a word bad. Lenny Bruce said it well in his 'Hard Words' bit. It's accessible in this article on the topic. https://medium.com/applaudience/lenny-bruce-are-there-any-niggers-here-tonight-71c6cf9f2a2c George Carlin is also mentioned in the article, as he also spoke of the power of words to hurt and manipulate--or not. All that said by way of... Sign in to see full entry.

They are the champions!

Each woman who stands up against the storm of the world's displeasure empowers the next, and the next. I salute Naomi Osaka for risking the lightning strike! I wonder if her taking a stand against exploitation and abuse in the name of Sport actually gave Simone Biles the push to standing up for herself. And Sunisa Lee, another American took gold for the US Gymnastics Team because Biles stepped aside, and that also makes me happy. I have wondered how much the controversy over Biles' amazing... Bubblewrap.

Bubblewrap. My mom used to fall down a lot, and we told her we should wrap her in bubblewrap. Today, talking about bumping into things a lot due to my wonky eyesight, the topic came up again. Bubblewrap hat... maybe a turban! Because it would be so elegant. Then this: *scene on a bus, train, or any mode of public transportation, maybe an elevator* 'pop' "Stop it." 'pop... pop pop...' "Cut it out!" "Just one more..." 'pop' 'pop pop pop' "No! No more! I don't even know you!" 'pop pop pop pop...' "... Sign in to see full entry.

More of ancient China

I have found another historical drama from China, set in the century before the first Empire. It is during the Warring States period which, if I recall correctly, lasted ~500 years. This one is titled QIN EMPIRE: Alliance. It isn't the first in the series, but I will be searching out the others. Some here may wonder at my fascination with China, may even assume I consider it a superior nation. After all, I went to Beijing a couple of years ago, and I watch all these shows about China's history.... Sign in to see full entry.

Awesome!

I've been watching a Chinese historic production called QIN DYNASTY EPIC. It is the time period of the consolidation of China's several disparate states in the 3rd Century BC by the same emperor who was eventually entombed with the famous terra-cotta Warriors, and numerous other wonders, when his bid for immortality proved fatal. I'm enjoying the history, and the actors some of whom were featured in KINGS' WAR, another historic drama set in the years after the death of the emperor and the end of... Sign in to see full entry.

Covid is not quite beat yet.

While people are stubbornly arguing over misinformation about Covid and vaccines and Covid vaccines, new variants stalk the country. Several things are clear, backed by scientific examination and evidence: The latest variant, Delta, is more contagious, more dangerous and even more deadly than those that came before. Vaccines are still effective against the Covid variants. The vaccinated, if they do get sick as rarely but sometimes happens, are far less likely to be hospitalized, even more less... Thinking of my father...

Not all the dads have been perfect, some fell down badly with the dadding thing. But those who didn't dad well still gave us gifts that made us some of the best of who we are. Mine gave me a love of the natural world, an appreciation of science, of travel, of global cuisines, and of word-play. We became better friends late in his life: I wish we'd had more time. I wish I had asked more questions about his life and experiences. Sign in to see full entry.

getting of education

I heard someone on the radio the other day who said, "It was a beautiful neighborhood..." and my mental vision went at once to gardens and trees, and houses far apart, and so much green! Then he went on to say, "There were so many families, so many happy people!" Well, paraphrased, but directly to the point. I learned something there about how else beauty can be perceived, and that my own perception has been limited, even crippled by not looking past my own life experience, and by not seeing... Commemoration

Memorial Day, here in the US... A day for remembrance, for appreciation, for thanks to those who served, to those who died, to the many whose lives were changed irrevocably. I was born about 7 years after the end of World War II. My father had served in the Pacific. He was sick from dysentary early on, went into sickbay for a time, and when he came out, his unit had moved on. He never connected with them again, but moved on, himself, placed with some other unit. I have snapshots from his time in... Sign in to see full entry.
