Nanny, Overbearing School Lunch Government--Enough to Make One Gag

Even though I have no school children of my own, what I heard of the school policy in Chicago makes me want to gag. The Chicago school district now forbids parents from providing their children with sack lunches. Instead, all the school children are required to eat the government-provided lunches.... Moving or Not Moving? Finding it hard to Organize

I went into despair when I turned out I could not move to another apartment right away upon obtaining my tax return. Whereas my current apartment manager will charge me a full month's rent if I am still here on the 1st, the apartments I desire will not be available until after the 1st at the... Bicycling Levels, Accompanying "Rules," and Observations

I consider myself a medium-level bicyclist. I don't have a passion for it like I do for cross country skiing. I bike to go on errands and exercise at the same time. At a medium-level, I never felt the need for spandex. I do, however, highly recommend wearing a helmet. To consider the various levels,... Sign in to see full entry.

Sometimes, With Seeming Desperation . . .

Sometimes, with seeming desperation, one digs a deeper hole. I found that out with my computer/internet situation. I should have left things the way they were with my ISP, that is to stay with my same ISP. In changing, or trying to change to a more bargain ISP, I only cut myself off. I did not... Computers in Public Places also Sometimes Act UP

I am going to make this quick. I lost 15 minutes out of 30 minutes left for today at the library when the previous computer I was using kept acting up. It is unfortunate, but it happens at the public setting, too. There have been occasions I know of where bank customers have been inconvenienced by... Sign in to see full entry.

The Mysterious Spell Check: What it Rejects, What it Accepts.

Since the dawn of the word processor or smart typewriter, people have come to rely on the spell check. While it is a useful tool, it is only a tool. Sometimes it can be annoying, beeping or highlighting words you know are acceptable. And at other times, it accepts what is not acceptable. When I was... Sign in to see full entry.

Be Patient With Me

I hope I did not make a mistake. I am in a transition with the internet provider--mostly for economic reasons--but currently I have not been able to access the internet via my computer. I am on a library computer now. I am hoping before my free day is over that I will determine how to get my... Sign in to see full entry.

Unfathomable Devestating Debt of Millions, Billions, Trillions

What I heard on the radio tonight gives me confirmation of perspective, but the people most in need of having perspective are our pork-barreling politicians in Washington. In times past--quite a long time ago now--the national deficit was in the millions. Now it is not only in the billions but into... Sign in to see full entry.

Strange Observations About Sports Nicknames

There is such a thing as a tiger-cat. I saw that in the dictionary, and it spurred me on to this topic. I thought next of "bearcats," a fairly common high school sports team nickname. But there is no such thing as a "bearcat," nor is there such a thing as a "seahawk." Baseball nicknames are quite... Sign in to see full entry.

A Holiday of the Mind, Not the State

I was about to write about the observance of holidays, how they come and go, and how such holidays have their heydays. Then I was reading in a reference book that April Fool's Day is more "a holiday of the mind, not of the state." 1 That is an interesting concept and yet readily relatable. April...
