I keep a small 'cheat sheet' at the bottom of my ms. The five or six main characters aren't a problem, but I still post them for me to check who is interacting with whom. Some characters will be tagged to ten or even fifteen minor characters, to whom I make a four- or five-word description of why they are there.
The main character's actions and personality are always based on someone (or someones), allowing me to make that character act like the live person acts. If I tie a character to a real person, let's say "Ralph," that character acts just like the real Ralph acts and reacts to things. It sounds complicated, but I've been doing it since I was ten.
It works for me!
