FSI, I had no idea your family went through this financial trouble. Thank goodness everything is back to normal. The time you mention was a very bad time for a lot of people. There were many people who lost a lot of money. I'm glad your Mom and Dad are still close, even though they went through so much.

It's always better to pay things off but there are circumstances when that can't happen. When a bank wants it all they are probably in worse condition than the one with the loan. The time you refer was difficult for many people. I had to sell my townhouse for a loss. I suspect your dad needed you to get going because he was masking his worry and didn’t want to project it on you.

Nobody wants to file for bankruptcy, but sometimes it is the only answer when consolidating debt still doesn't work with what you can afford. It is also detrimental to your credit score. Overspending with no income to cover is a hard pill to swallow, but it happens, especially when a medical crisis sinks you in a river of doom with non-stop bills. I'm sure your dad got everything worked out and has since recovered.
