First and foremost, thank your son for his service to America.
I lived in the UP for eight years, and one of my many hobbies was watching those 1,200'+ long freighters pass by. They were something else. As I was saying, I would stand at the very tip of WhiteFish Bay, and look out to where the Fitz went down. They have a museum there with many different articles that they found floating or washed ashore... and then they added video taken of the ship, and it is clear that it was caught between two monster waves, and lifted out of the water... and she snapped.

When my son was a naval sea cadet about 25 years ago he was on the last Frigate to sail as it were in the great lakes. During this maneuver they put the buoys out when the Fitzgerald went down essentially marking it as a grave sight when no ships can now pass over. He was one of the last to pass overhead Fitzgerald.
