It has seemed like Australians in many cases are trying to be America Down Under. Maybe it's our common Western European roots, societies that were so commercial, so about making profit! It is the bane of the US, and will be of any other nation that emulates it!

It sounds like a good place to be - a developing economy and lots of rural areas within an hour's drive to medical care and shops. Tending chickens & other livestock after a day's work in a business would make for a long day, but a healthy one.

What you write of reminds me of the county most of the car washes are located in. It was a rural county decades ago, only requiring five on-duty cops to cover county. Now the county is a bustling one with many suburbs.
