My Reply to Pat, & Some Background on why I Am Writing Romance Stories Now

Oh, yes! My mom was a big reader of 'True Romance' and other magazines like it. She also bought and read "True Crime" or something like that. I was about six at the time (~1959) when I first picked one up and started reading it. Naturally, I went after the crime magazines at first, but when I ran out of those, I moved to the romance mags.

It was in one of the crime magazines that I first read about the Herb Clutter family being murdered in late 1959. Coverage of it started being carried in "The New Yorker" magazine, something I started buying every month, and then the "Saturday Evening Post" every week.

I bought the book that came from the story, "In Cold Blood" by Truman Capote. Capote had written "Breakfast At Tiffany's" in 1958, and was getting famous from it. However, he later stated that after writing "In Cold Blood," he was unable to write anything coherent again.

Having written a few totally true stories, I can understand why he was having problems. None of you have seen it... yet... but I finished a true story where a man I was good friends with, in early 1966, titled "That Russian Guy Down The Road." Remembering the morning I found his bullet-riddled body, even some 55+ years later, has slowed me down. It was that story that inspired me to write romance, allowing me to see the positive side of life again.

Great book cover. I'm guessing you had much to do with the design. Good luck with your sales - I believe there's a lot of interest in romance stories; they've been popular for as long as I can remember. I remember reading magazines - like "True Romance," when I was about 14 years old, probably sold for around 50 cents in those days (when Hershey Bars were a nickel).
