Years ago, I had that same dry cough. Mine turned out to be adult-onset asthma. I was prescribed albuterol and Flovent inhalers. Thankfully, after quitting smoking and living in a pet-free home, it cleared up over time, and I was able to function without the aid of inhalers. Hopefully, they will find a remedy for Jim.

It is a toughy. My brother is nearly Jim's age and the slightest thing will make him tetchy.

Perhaps you should check into a hotel for a good night's rest and some room service. Get his family to oversee Jim's care for a day, maybe two. They'll be so much nicer to you after you return, because they'll realize all you're dealing with. I know he's not doing it deliberately and may not even see how exhausted you are, but that doesn't mean you don't deserve a break today.
