When John was in physical therapy, we learned that being capable of getting up from a sitting position without the use of your arms is really important. Mobility is everything when it comes to the aging process. Maybe with practice, he can eventually do it.

My dad saw his rheumatologist. She wanted him to touch his toes. "I can't even touch my knees," my dad said.
She also had him stand against a wall. His head cannot touch the wall. She said, "How about you get your head to touch the wall?"
That earned a dead stare.

Kabu.....
The chair thing completely depends on how the chair is built. Before my current problem which I am really working on, I could get out of two types of chair without using my hands and two chairs I pushed up with the arms. As my summer of 88 is upon me, I'm glad to be able to get on my feet at all anyway I can. With Son's attendance and watchfulness I got out to a family lunch gathering at Red Lobster this week and really enjoyed the whole thing.

I need solid arms in a chair to push up from, and had my son install a handicapped toilet in my bathroom a couple years ago - it's 4" higher than standard models and easier to get up from. I think the difficulty lifting up out of chairs comes with the 80s... Your therapist needs some counseling.
