Re: Kabu

To write a good historical book, research is essential.

Congrats!

I adore researching. When I wrote my book "Tom Ugly" I spent the first two years in the Southerland Library which had all the history of the bridge and the area of Sydney. Then It took me four years to write and I Thank our Wiley because I eventually published it. I was so involved in Australia with the history I doubt if I would ever have finished the manuscript in Australia.

Re: Pat

Thanks! As I wrote someplace-and I've forgotten where-I had put this true story out of my head for decades... but I remember it crystal clear now. I think the incident was a lot more traumatic on my then 12-year-old self than I thought.

I'm trying to prolong the story getting him simply for the word count. I could easily say he escaped by hiding in the trunk of a car, took a cruise from France to Buenos Aires, and then flew to the US in less than 1200 words... but that will make for a short story. I'm hoping to get ~45,000-60,000 words out of this story. If I take the easy way, the story might be 20,000 words, tops.

The guy had told me a ton of stories of close calls and bad men who wanted to rob him. I want to get all of that into the story. Relating his perils in his escape makes him more life-like and will make the ending of this story make better sense. As he began to sense they were 'closing in on him,' he got very scared. I was 12, and I could feel and sense his fear.

I wrote a passage in a book about a fugitive who caught someone who crossed his path at the wrong time, and even the man I hired to to the Audible book emailed me and said, "That murder scene description you did as he killed that person gave me chills. That was some real "Twilight Zone" stuff."

LOL... all I meant to say was "Thanks!" but my head is already working on how this story ends and planting all of the clues along the way.

Thanks, Pat!

Very interesting post. How writers research the background info is changing so fast and
it's good to have this info.  I hope all the right words come just when you need them.
