I use a running cheatsheet directly below my MS. I base my characters on people I know, so I will keep a list of characters and the 'friend' based on them. I've known a lot of nice people and a lot of whack-a-doodles, so I have a rich base of characters.

I'd probably mix the heroes and villains between stories.
