It's hard to really detest someone when you can see why they took
the opposite side of a debate. Although if they get in your face and shake their fist it's hard to respond rather than react.

My mom and dad taught us something to that effect. They taught us to observe, and to be aware that there are at least two sides to a situation/argument/story and to learn what they are said to be. Then they told us to investigate; that not everything we hear will be the truth and not everything will be a lie; to seek the truth and then make up our own minds.
