Good Afternoon
I really enjoyed reading this post. So many people have made do with so little during wars. I've never had lard and I'm positive I would not like it. I think if I was given something I did not like I would have to be honest and say I cannot eat this.

WWI was a rough time to be in the Army
You must have been very proud of him and his military service.

Good afternoon
I just love the story about the colorful dressmakers. I guess that you make do with what you've got. As for the lard sandwiches, it may have been better had they added something sweet and fried them. Either way, I would have snubbed it as well.

Pat this was told to me by my mother over the years she did tell me tales of her childhood aNd early womanhood. Thank you.

Your generation sacrificed so much during the war. We must never forget.

on occassion we ate Lard for we were not wealthy farmers, not when I was young. Mother would mix gravy with her lard though and that made it tasty.

I hope your dad came back all in one piece and a hero. As for the
aunties, lard sandwiches wouldn't have appealed to me as a kid, either.
