Kids have to experiment with power, discovering their strength, measuring their effect on the world. I once found Charlie, of a similar age perhaps, smashing some glass fish tanks that had been stacked in the yard for hosing down. I understood the glory of the shattering, the music of it, the satisfaction... but stopped him right smart, anyway--because... that's mom-power.

You've still got the knack, or maybe it's that abundance of sense that young folks won't give a plugged nickel for.  I've got some good sense, it's just that sometimes I can't remember what it is.

Re: Strange how that destructive impulse seizes little boys - it always ticked

Yes Pat once I shot at a sparrow and killed a sky lark. I asked Mother to cook it as I thought it was a penance. I plucked it, she cooked it. I was aghast she had not taken the inside out.

me off when I caught them shooting their BB guns at sparrow and robins. The problem was, sometimes they didn't miss.

This poem makes me think about how death around us strikes us in so many different ways.
