Spending a day with a boy's ups and downs, explorations and discoveries.

Teachers need to have a sense of humor more than a sense of punishment.

Re: Taps

Sometimes a child was too ashamed to mention ill treatment. I had my knuckles cut till they bled with a ruler. I never told anyone and it was not my fault. Ribcage had his pride, I know you miss him.

Re: Sea_Gypsy

I suppose entertainment was rather crude. It was the way of things. Going back farther my father said his father threatened a teacher with a good hiding if he caned his sons . As he had done. It never happened again.

Re: Corbin

Perhaps so Corbin but a swishy cane would raise a nice mark.

Childhood antics are so underrated.

School wouldn't be school without the naughty boys smoking and carrying on.

Those were the school days back in the day. I'm glad I came along later.

those were the days...the Principle had a paddle that had large holes in it so it would swing faster to one's butt!

The Old School... when there was no internet and TV. Corporal punishment is a thing of the past along with marbles, slingshot and many other things....

Conkers and carbide - I don’t know those terms but  your poem is a great description of boys’ back when. How horrible to hit children in school! No one got hit when I was in school, ever! And it was a Catholic school. So sorry for you.

Ribcage got thrashed in school several times.  I didn't know it then as he didn't tell us until he was well into adulthood.

When I was a boy, our family doctor told my mother to let me put soil in my mouth.

Well, if this post didn't remind me of Charles Dickens, nothing would...

I can just see the boys lined up - 4th graders, no doubt. That's the age I remember boys being the most obnoxious. And that trick with the rubber band and flies: oh, gross!

LOL...you sound very much like the boys in the little country school that i attended in the 50's before  I went to boarding school.
