Re: There is a lot of sadness felt throughout your story.

Grand father Sassy. Yes times were hard the mother did not get a widows pension for 6 weeks. If the lady in the Manor house had not offered to lend the cash they would have starved. She said she did it because they were a respectable family. So even there a condition arose. Although the same lady lost both her sons in the war. WW!.

There is a lot of sadness felt throughout your story.

Your dad appears to have gone through more hell than any human should ever have to deal with. The icy feel of a pending death is never good for anyone other than the one who may be suffering beyond repair.

Of course it was all true Pat. It was tough going living in a small village in the Cotswolds. seven children and the mother no doubt from lack of nourishment was rarely ever in the best of health.

Yes I suppose Europe is not like living next door. Of course all the commonwealth countries joined once. I know if USA had not come in last time it would be a different way of life here now.

That's a lot of interesting history that you have shared with us, CC. I find wartime history to be especially interesting.

We were lucky in that there was such a distance between the US and Europe.  It gave us the opportunity to rework our vast manufacturing base to produce the weapons needed.

The War to end all Wars!!! well the peace did last for 25 years. I am reading Churchill's books of WW11. They are a great read. I am getting rid of 'stuff' slowly but these i must keep for they are a true history from the perspective of a great man.
