Answer to your trick question!

The dogs loved their time out. The way I look at it, 'we' are a pack, and I am the pack leader. They take their queues from me, allowing us to proceed through the forest and along the lakes an rivers safely.

Now, to your other question!

'How long is a piece of string?' is a phrase used to avoid responding to a question requesting an estimate of the size, amount, or duration of something. It generally means that the questioner  does not know or does not want to guess an answer to the original question.

There was a trick question on a college entrance exam that was

in one of those Sunday features that has stuck with me. Here 'tis:  How long is a piece of string?

Sounds like your dogs know exactly how to be out in nature. I love sighting any hawks or eagles - even the turkey vultures that own the sky above our neck of the woods.
