My Disclaimers, 'General Disclaimer' and 'Personalized'

Several of them. I always post my standard disclaimer at the opening of such a book:

This book details the author's personal experiences with and opinions about depression and other mental health issues. The author is not a healthcare provider.

The author and publisher are providing this book and its contents on an “as is” basis and make no representations or warranties of any kind with respect to this book or its contents. The author and publisher disclaim all such representations and warranties, including for example warranties of merchantability and healthcare for a particular purpose. In addition, the author and publisher do not represent or warrant that the information accessible via this book is accurate, complete or current.

The statements made about products and services have not been evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any condition or disease. Please consult with your own physician or healthcare specialist regarding the suggestions and recommendations made in this book.

Except as specifically stated in this book, neither the author or publisher, nor any authors, contributors, or other representatives will be liable for damages arising out of or in connection with the use of this book. This is a comprehensive limitation of liability that applies to all damages of any kind, including (without limitation) compensatory; direct, indirect or consequential damages; loss of data, income or profit; loss of or damage to property and claims of third parties.

You understand that this book is not intended as a substitute for consultation with a licensed healthcare practitioner, such as your physician. Before you begin any healthcare program, or change your lifestyle in any way, you will consult your physician or other licensed healthcare practitioner to ensure that you are in good health and that the examples contained in this book will not harm you.

This book provides content related to topics physical and/or mental health issues. As such, use of this book implies your acceptance of this disclaimer.

I reword it a bit to shape it more toward my specific use in the current story, but I paid $250 for this legal lingo. You are free to use it should you need to do so.

Then, along the way, I will remind readers like this disclaimer I used in 'Caretaker.':

You need to know that I am in no way an authority on this subject. I was a paramedic for many years, and then I was an ER nurse, but that in no way 'authorizes' to give you 'medical advice.' My expertise comes from caring for my wife as she made her slide into oblivion. Her initial symptoms started in mid-2013. The initial signs were loss of her train of thought, and her words began to jumble. At the end, she no longer knew who I was much of the time.

As I go along, I hope to help someone, maybe you, who lives with and or cares for someone with dementia understand the pressure and anger that will occur, no matter how much you love that person. This story will not be a traditional look at this process. It will come to you from a man who loved his wife so much that he would have died to make her journey more comfortable. Here we go.

I hope this helps you.
V

Are there specific "disclaimers" designed to give you protection?

Re: Good choice of an editor/expert to double check the text.

Exactly.  There are a lot of 'experts' out there who have nary a clue. When I write something like this, I do a lot of research. If I find conflicting results, I always call someone I trust to help me decide what to do.

Good choice of an editor/expert to double check the text.

Really good choice to ask him to write a foreward. Readers will be aware of that backup, where they most likely wouldn't know how careful you are with the details.
