I’ll bet you were and still are a very beautiful woman. Your mother probably didn’t realize that was a hurtful remark. I recall my mother reminding me that I should get a hair trim. Lol. (I don’t do haircuts very well.)

This reminds me of when my paternal grandmother had Alzheimer's. She had always hated how my dad let his hair go gray. One time, though, she complimented his hair.
"But it's gray," he said.
"Oh, it'll get dark again," she said.

Poor old Mum, she must have been beautiful when she was young because your Dad was a good looking man, mind it was hard times for most in farming in those days. So! Mum's words didn't come true

I think it's a generational thing. My mother was the same way, quick
to correct her children's errors, slow to praise. Part of the old spare the rod and spoil the child philosophy I guess.

You got me here wondering what my Mother would have said to me under the same conditions. One never knew what was going to come out of her mouth. We are so used to having photos on driver's licenses being such horrible things. One time I was surprised for one to turn out very flattering. I proudly showed it to my Mom and she said, "Wow! That's beautiful.....How will they know it is you?" LOL
