Good to see you've overcome an almost insurmountable roadblock to becoming a functioning adult, and beyond that  successful, creative, ambitious. Look forward to seeing more of your posts.

Re: My journalism prof., Bill Ward, was an award-winning newsman before

Thank you. I never had a major in journalism, but I did get a minor in the subject. I was editor of my high school 'newsletter' for two years and spent all seven of my years in college on the various college newspapers, four of them as lead editor.

Without rehashing what the current story will tell you, I was severely abused by my mother as a child and she was the reason that I left home at age 16. It took me nearly forty years to forgive her. Oddly enough, it was her abuse that instilled the drive in me to never, ever stop doing what it took to rise to the top. I had five brothers and sisters. She drove everyone of them down and they never really accomplished much. I defied her efforts to go to my emotional knees and developed my life motto - Rise Above.

My journalism prof., Bill Ward, was an award-winning newsman before

he came to the faculty at SIUE - and his J-students were taught NOT to put themselves into the story. We were to be blank slates, having no opinion - which as you well know, is not possible. Our experiences affect how we perceive the stories we cover, no matter how we try to be 100% objective.

My first reaction to the preface to your rewrites is that the author seemed to be telling the reader how to react, and that it might be more effective to let them judge for themselves as they read the story. Having read further, I could see the why and how you crafted it as you did. Tough, highly emotional subject, issues many of us have faced (parents with PTSD or mental issues, abuse - sometimes unintended, and a sense of isolation, being outsiders). It could well be a cathartic read for so many, and relateable even to those whose lives may have been more sheltered.
