Sadly RP. Chickens can be brutal to each other, I think the best system was when there was around about 25 in a long ark. It was moved every day onto fresh ground. The chickens were safe from predators and seemed quite happy. Of course the drawback was it was very labour intensive and the public want cheap food .

Well of course Taps we were the same even during the war years when it was almost impossible to get a quantity of poultry food we used to go leasing or buy out of date cake mixtures etc. Of course and worse, but I won't mention that. My friend who kept a couple of pigs was actually reported for using potatoes.'No his poor little mother replied as she lifted the lid on an iron pot 'we only use pig taters.' They were the little tiny ones that were once thrown away. Of course they ate some themselves as well obviously.

I love it. I grew up with chickens--hens, layers, pullets, chicks, fryers, roosters....
This poem really takes me back.

There's a big deal here about humane treatment of chickens and other farm animals going on. It's on the ballot for the next election. I haven't studied it all yet so I don't know if it borders on the ridiculous or is valid. Free range is best though, I think. And to feed them natural feed.
