As a kid who grew up in poverty, the idea of someone giving me
something I hadn't earned was a sensitive issue. I wanted to be treated as an equal to the others, not handed something free because they knew I needed it. Pride, I guess. Not sure that's how Jake feels, it could be something entirely different - but I still think it's nice of your dad to go out of his way to be fair and generous with his staff.
