I would invest in a good strong torch and not go outside in the dark . Well not me but you there are only stray cats and hedgehogs prowling. Mind I wouldn't mind  a good fat goose ,but then I would keep it.

I like seeing paw prints in the snow. The snow outside can really tell a story...I am sure Mr. Graysome gets very excited to see the birds and chipmunks.

Does your neighbour have a dog maybe, who came by during the night to check things out?

Kabu. dear lady -

What a beautiful picture! Yes, the prints must be from a wolfie! Take care trudging in the shadows, if you must... lol. Sure beats having the coyotes here. Their call of the chase is quite distasteful to me, but the howl of a wolf- oh-we don't have wolves in these parts, but if we did, it would be a thrill to hear the wolf call.

You just reminded me about my younger days when I hiked Mill

Creek for hours and read the footprints in the mud. Raccoons, big dog tracks that were probably coyotes, deer prints. Never saw the creatures, but if I were there early in the morning, the tracks were pretty fresh. There were trout, the speckled kind, flirting through the clear water, impossible to see against the rocky creekbed unless they moved. Loved those hikes.
