Re: TAPS

Well, good for you, carrying heavy backpacks on mountain trails, cause I couldn't do that, much less the water jugs on my head. I do remember learning how to walk as a pre-teen with a book balanced on my head, or trying to do that...

Oy! That must have been so painful! I can't even imagine it!

I don't remember ever trying to carry anything on my head.  I used to carry heavy backpacks on mountain trails, but not on my head.

RPresta

I have a photo that my grandfather took overseas.  It's a man with a wooden box on his head filled with food.  It's larger than what that lady has in her head!

Re: BC

Ouch! I can imagine it's never been the same; you probably have abulging disc there. I think a lot of the young teens use Instagram now; the one's in my family said, "Nobody uses FB anymore." Meaning nobody their age. I think the physical equivalent of the water well is, and always will remain, dependent upon where one lives.

I tried to carry something on my head like that once when I was about 10 and hurt my neck.  It's never been the same since.

I wonder what today's equivalent of the water hole is?  Sadly, I think it's FB.  This needs to change.

Re: mneme

Hi,  mneme! Now that's funny, and yes, I do believe in coincidences. Glad your headache is fine; mine's better also!

Re: Aba Brother

Yes, so much to absorb. I think it was also common in Italy until not that long ago. Thank you.

Presta sis

Aren't there lots of details to see? This vinta pic is interesting and again, this kind and of carrying water and weight are a common sight in Indian villages.

Re: Annicita

Hah ha! Good question. Older than I am, I would venture to guess... Seriously, judging from the hair styles, the shoes, the apron, and looking at the lady in the middle, the cut of the dress and its print pattern, I would guess the picture was taken about 1944ish. (There is a family photo of someone wearing a very similar dress taken from that time.)

Also, I consider the fact that they are rather dressed up for everyday water-gathering, and that they are either wearing head coverings or have them visible, could indicate that it was taken on a Sunday or holiday/holyday, maybe Easter. This is from an area in L'Aquila, Abruzzo; more north than that of my family.

Re: Kabu

Yes, but worse would be if the wrong person's family hammered out a deal on a dowry... I'm thinking, as I mentioned, that the guys hung around to offer to help out a girl in whom they were interested. And they did gather there, at least in my grandmother's time. No, I couldn't do that either. You brought up a good point about the two father's haggling over the dowry in relation to my ancestors. That didn't happen. It was the prospective SIL who approached the FIL to be and made the deal. Hmmm?

And just for the record, today I have the Mother of Nearly All Headaches...

Re: Nautikos

It does, indeed, look risky, but at least some of them did carry water like that. Maybe the guys would offer to help out once in a while. Padding where? No, I enlarged the photo and looked closely, and there is no padding under that pot that I can see, or probably anywhere else for that matter... LOL!

Yes, I'm sure it did! At least one gets that impression from the photo...

had to sorta kinda maybe meet someone somewhere so then the two Fathers could get together and haggle over dowries. I cannot ever imagine wearing a full water jug on my head let alone smiling about it. great post

RP

It's looking rather risky! But isn't she wearing some kind of padding under that pot?
