he quite obviously was never going to be a team player and was going to spend his time compaining and ducking work. Not what dad expects from workers.

Yes, it was good he went, and a very enjoyable post because I have met people like that who resented younger folks. I like the way you described the second layer of his personality rearing it's ugly head. In my twenties especially, I recall seeing that. Well, always, one will find people like that.
