My gut is guessing C. I find while on the trail that people in general, not just women, will give a smile or a greeting, to someone they have seen before.

Hmm, interesting question, CC. Maybe the answer is the flowers and gardening are relaxing to the person. Maybe it's a question of having the time or inclination to smile and/or chat. Maybe the answer is "all of the above!" Heck, I don't know! Sometimes people just act the way they do, because they act the way they do! Holidays aren't always fun for all.
