Interesting Kabu, most Nursery rhymes have a hidden meaning behind them. I suppose they were passed around as gossip instead of emails. Ring a ring of roses .The Black Death. Not much on offer to stop it in those days, I suppose a posy was better than nothing. Cough, cough.Well researched indeed.

That is a neat history behind the song. It makes me wonder about the histories behind other songs that are a part of the public's consciousness.

Re: Ciel
One of my favorite areas of informal study also. I think Daddy (and the loss of Mommy) left a huge impression upon her. Those were dangerous, ominous times to be a Queen, much less a Queen sharing the throne. She most likely trusted no one.

Fascinating - goes to show that writers with their imaginations and turning of phrases have always played a part in our lovely world.

One of my favorite areas of study...
Amy Robsart was dying of breast cancer, and most likely her death was suicide on a day when she sent the entire household staff away. Of course, Robert was something of a jerk and gave her no sort of life as his wife. The supposed scandal was great, of course, and the salacious gossip was all over Europe, reveling in the worst interpretations.
I suspect Robert Dudley and Elizabeth Tudor became friends simply because there was no one else there for them to socialize with, and they were, after all, teenagers and all romanticky.
One reason she never married was because she had no intention of sharing the power and no one wanted to marry her if they would not be king. She had also grown up watching daddy Henry marry over and over, and she had seen how terribly vulnerabe women were to their husbands.

Kabu
Dear Kabu, Tudor history is fascinating to me. Of course I believe your fantastic post. After she died, there was found among Elizabeth I's possessions, something she had always kept that Robert had given to her, perhaps a letter. I don't recall what it was, most likely more than one item. "Ring Around the Rosie" is another nursery rhyme with a darker meaning: the Plague. "Yankee Doodle..." has a derogatory meaning: a Yankee Doodle (Dandy) was an insulting term for an effeminate man (not merely the word, dandy), I read. A fun post this is.

This is fascinating...
I always heard that Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, How does your garde grow? was hiding a secret plot amongst the royals, but never knew this about Hey, Diddle Diddle...

I believe it. I've read that many if not most nursery rhymes have darker
meanings than is realized. This is fascinating stuff, Dear Kabu! I always wondered why Elizabeth never married. I respect her for not marrying for any other reason than love, especially in her position of needing an heir. "To thine own heart be true" comes to mind. Thank you for sharing your research!
