Re: Kabu
When the car factories started the change was almost immediate. I remember my brother saying our wages are going up again folk could afford to buy cars and put a deposit on a house. As I worked for my father, well that's a different tale.

Re: RPresta
Thank you. I do remember the first ice cream, it just seemed out of this world. Sweets remained rationed until past !950, probably saved a lot of little teeth.

Such a sad thing for a child to endure; the scarring lasts forever, I do believe. So sorry.

Adults may understand and accept rationing in wartime, but kids may understand with their heads, accept because there is no other remedy, but there is still some awareness, I suspect, that the adults of the world have failed them.

I have never had to live through a period of rationing. I can imagine it is extremely difficult on people to have to do so.

Times were really tough and for many years. people think back with nostalgia but Mother used to send food parcels to England to a cousin right up until my parents sponsored them to come to Australia. Even in the early 60's there was still plenty of austerity in the UK. In Australia we didn't have much until Wool went through the roof, but since nobody else did one never felt deprived...and there was always threepence for a bag of lollies.
