Kabu

I always thought spitting into the spitton was a big advance over simply spitting on the floor, not uncommon in them there days...

My Dad smoked even as he drank a cup of coffee, but then times were when one did not know what tomorrow would bring. I managed to stop fairly early. That spittoon would look nice on your mantle shelf. I did see one in a pub once but the owner was a lady of certain pronounced views and i doubt if anyone would have dared christen the trophy.

I never smoked but my dad and husband did but quit at the same time.  My dad died of cancer but not lung cancer and my ex husband had surgery a year or so ago for his heart.  Who knows if the smoking caused any of that

I remember watching a Three Stooges short film where a guy had to clean out spittoons. I had no idea what the big deal was until I read the Wikipedia entry on the film and found out just what a spittoon was.

I am glad to see that smoking has declined.

My foster grandpa chewed tobacco - used to threaten us that he would spit in our eye if we didn't behave. We behaved!

Your stories about the "good old days" in Australia remind me

so much of the same time in the old west of the USA. Cowboys, saloons, spittoons... If you all had shoot-outs at high noon and a few cattle rustlers, it's really similar.

Oh, such a beautiful flower! As for smoking, your post reminded of so many stories of my family and smoking. Glad you quit, S. Sister! One of the last things my mother ever said to me was, "Don't smoke!"
