- Go to Wolf Hair??????
Maybe the Squirrel Boss was just bossy enough to pull out some of the Wolf's hair before he ran up his tree?

I looked out my window and saw a field mouse. What you really need is a night camera, that would be fun. I did read that bears will sit outside an outdoor toilet, until one throws them a toilet roll.

Or it could have been dropped by one of the scavenger birds, transported inadvertantly from a furry road-kill...
One might mount a motion-triggered wildlife camera and put in a red yard light which the critters won't be alarmed by, and get some pictures of who comes by.

As Pat said - a lone wolf would disappear at your coming before you knew it had been there. And it would not have been attacked by a coyote - unless that coyote wanted to commit suicide, which is of course possible, though not likely...

A lone wolf will see you long before you even suspect he's around
and will do anything to avoid a face-to-face. I don't believe he thinks of humans as a food source, but not wandering in the dark is a good idea, just so you don't trip over something.

Occasionally, in the stillness of a summer night, the coyotes' sounds travel though a window from a distant field - somewhere! But regularly, the crows or ravens, know there is a feast possible on Trash Eve and Trash Day! They too, have a pecking order, pardon the pun. Commander Crow is the watcher, and first to gather his food treasures; then his mate is permitted to join. They sometimes allow a third bird to join, who appears to have the job of chasing off potential meal-stealers in return for a few bites! All very interesting!
