I wonder what the source of the noise outside in the wee hours of the morning was...I say the gnomes are a great hypothesis.

Early trick or treaters? Kids looking for the party?
A nosy raccoon who thinks a door will open if he bumps it a few times...

Get you some firecrackers and when you hear it again just light one and throw it outside. It will clear the air right away.

Well I was alone in an old farm house once and there was this sudden knocking on the window. It gave me a start but I pulled back the curtain and it was a cat scratching
itself its leg kept hitting the window, so it was probably a some little critter having a scratch.

Oh, those night owl Gnomes!
Strangely enough, I was awakened by strange noises in the wee hours too but the moon was buried in cloud cover here..I decided it must have been the rain pattering everly louder on scattering leaves on the patio...or maybe one of the Girl Gnomes traveled far to drop in and say hi...:)
