I agree, well I don't really mind what folk wear. I honestly prefer it to nudity once one is past 90.

A very eloquent entry, I find this to be. You have hit the proverbial nail on the head, I feel.

correction: hiding "one's self"

Good post, Dear Kabu!

It is a complex issue, imo. I feel hiding oneself is surrendering to male domination and oppression but then again I understand there are many Muslim women who only feel comfortable in public when covered; no matter what reasons exist for that feeling, I think it should be respected to some degree - what that degree is I can't say or judge.

I hear what you are saying and totally agree. I will say that the l believe the lady who made all the fuss for keeping her niqab was doing it for propoganda purposes - whether she was pushed by the males in her family to do so or not doesn't really matter. It was seeing how far she could go, to what point she could thwart the laws of this beautiful country. I've read her statements - they all sound completely fabricated. She wanted to be the 'Rosa Parks' of the Muslim community...except she is moving in reverse.

I agree with you, Grandmummy...

But in the ancient times, Jewish women were required to wear head coverings too.  Not only as a symbol of their lesser being than men, but more importantly-in so far as their faith is concerned-as a symbol of their humility and respect for the God who gave them life.

I understand it to a point, but that I doesn't mean I agree with it.  No woman, regardless of her faith, is lesser to any man.

Well said, Kabu. I have a hunch certain ultra-conservatives in this

nation would send women back to the dark ages when their clothing restricted freedom of movement, before they had the right to vote (the 100th Anniversary of that is coming to the USA in 5 years), or own property in their own name, or obtain credit. The ones whose tradition demands they cover themselves and live as 2nd class or lower may achieve equality in another 100 years - as long as those of us who have fairly equal rights continue to fight for all women.
