Please post some smells, but only nice ones, roast chestnuts, will do for a start . I wonder as you walk through the long grass if a bear is still about. Was that a one of frost or has it turned cold at night. It is so frustrating when we get one that burns things up and then a month of mild weather. Have you ever thought of wearing knee pads in case you trip on your ramble.

The scents of the forest...
On hot summer days, I have driven slowly up a forest road, noticing how in every grove of fir or birch or pine, there's a different smell: you could go blindfolded through and know just where you are!

I've been walking our woods almost daily and enjoyed them! I haven't seen any Gnomes though - they must be hiding! Maybe they're afraid my Bennie might mistake them for groundhogs...

What a wonderful walk you took us on! Thank you! I think Fall is my favorite season and you described its' awakening so well. I hope you will continue to take these walks and document them (and take me along!)
