It is amazing how folk adapt 60 years ago going up in a plane was a big thing. I don't think I would want to travel far in one of those old ships although my gradfather's brother brought his carriage and horses over. That was a bit of a show off wasn't it cobber.

Over time, the days of the sailing ships have taken on a aura of romance that was certainly not experienced by most of those who sailed then as sailors or passengers...

Those long ship rides were tough from what I have seen in history. My great-aunt was about four when she came over here from Italy, and she talked about how difficult it was. I know there were a lot of relatives they never saw again.

I have so much respect for the women who crossed the ocean on those sailing ships. My Grandmother Jelinek was one of those. Like you say, she had to stay in the hold but she never got sick. Instead, she cared for the sick ones and cleaned up after them along with taking care of her two little ones. She left loved ones behind in Bohemia.

I heard of someone coming through Australian Customs... He was asked if he'd ever been convicted of a crime, and he replied, "I didn't realize that was still a requirement." I heard he got strip-searched.

It's much easier today than back then, what with cellulaires, internet... It's true that day to day life gets in the way sometimes, but usually, when one really aches to talk to those absent, it's feasible.

Yes, goodbys are so difficult but sometimes they are unavoidable.
