Those were much more sustainable and responsible times it would seem and without
the use of plastic bags. To witness the harms of plastic bags, one just needs to drive
throughout the state of New York. The plastic bag has unofficially been named the
N.Y. State Flower.

I enjoyed reading about those times. Very interesting to read about one's shopping from years ago.

Yes or a Hessian sack for non food items. I remember wicker baskets and of course the local basket maker would knock a nice one up out of willow which he cut from his own willow bed. I remember my Dad ordering those big washing baskets. In fact , well never mind, I used to make string bags, yes when needs must.

My parents had a store during that period. It never occurred to us to be concerned about how people would get their groceries home. They came in cars, trucks and even in wagons, we usually boxed stuff in our shipping boxes if it was a big order and that was it. We never thought there would be things to toss away. People even brought back their soda bottles for a refund, no cans or plastic bottles. What is plastic, we did not know anything about it.

We had a couple of green canvas bags about the size of the paper bags today for bringing home store items. When I was a child I didn't even know what plastic was. There wasn't any plastic anything. Meat was wrapped in brown paper and tied with string. Good post.

Wow! This story reads like one of the topics we write about at the
Write Your Own Story sessions at the Center. Beautiful description of how a housewife's shopping day went at the time - perfect reference material for a screenwriter looking for authenticity.
