ai could survive beyond humanity, why would feelings and emotions be important to ai. of all the self help books i have read advise against making emotional decisions. how soon would a machine get fed up with dealing with emotional humans, i get fed up pretty quickly dealing with family members that do not live in reality. pp, sometimes we have to go with the pain, life cannot be and will never be all pleasure. when given a choice most people i see today go with the pleasure even when it is the wrong choice. seems to me ai would only be interested in the best choice if emotions were not involved. in the future world, the way i see the world being consumed, maybe ai is the only intelligence that should or could survive.

You mean Bicentennial Man wasn't a true story? I'm very disappointed..lol. I must say it's a nice idea but computers are not and never will be human.

Yes I pretty much agree with your ideas or your agreement with others on this.
I'll just say this planet will end one day, I think that might be a pretty safe bet, but I will give good odds if the money is up front. I think we are more likely to be taken out by Aliens of course they may use robots, and that would be another theory to contend with. If I could get one to take a dog for a walk, I would be looking for a new pet. Keep up the good work.

A very interesting read. You make a compelling case for your position.

No, maybe not revisit some issues but certainly post something similar because it
was so interesting.

I am in your corner all the way on this. A computer cannot reproduce itself for starters. UNLESS we programme it to and provide the materials for it to do so...and besides I do keep my finger close to that "Nuke the bloody thing" red button. just in case.

Loved this post and made me feel great to have beaten the computer 4 times now at chess out of A LOT of playing but the knowledge you've input now is so very helpful. I notice the computer changes its game ever so creatively after a loss and then I seem to get beaten more quickly.

As always, a thoroughly enjoyable and fascinating class....and I have no argument with nearly everything you said. I've had a very long few days and so I'm too tired to give you a full comment, but can tell you that the whole pain/pleasure thing is like a Pandora's Box in terms of the thoughts I could probably pour out!LOL! I'm afraid, if nothing else, I see that very point almost being the very reason Hawking is more likely right in his prediction as I see the pursuit of pleasure and almost blind desire to avoid pain (aging/death) as one of, if not the, chief engineer of our destruction. And for those who take comfort in the "God is in charge..." I say, yes, and how do we know this isn't exactly as intended, given that our greatest gift was free will to choose? But I digress......(I told you I am very tired...)
And, as for commitment....I don't know where to begin, but I certainly don't see it as being something emotion is necessary for - agreement is what is the necessary component in commitment. Emotion may or may not be involved, depending on the individual(s) and the moment....but for there to be commitment, first comes agreement, a decision, a choice based on facts or emotion....both of which are based on input - garbage in, garbage out. And agreement can occur in a group...in individuals, singularly and geographically separated when they experience similar effects.......agreement that leads to commitment to a particular course of action. I believe AI could and would do the same...agree due to input received and learned from, facts.... that lead to logical actions to survive this planet or flee to another - hopefully humans would have enough survivors to tag along.......JMHO - probably making no sense as I really didn't intend to get into this right now but you do know how to hook me, you wily devil you!!!

I believe your theory is correct. I play games on my computer, and
don't win as often as I'd like, but it does make me chuckle when I do. It would be so much more satisfying if the computer felt some disappointment when I win. But it's not a people.
