Nautikos

Excellent post.  I don't believe there is one reason, probably a handful of main reasons if I were to stop and really think about it but my immediate thought is that the root cause would be materialism and the fact that Western Civilization grew to a point of "everyman" being able to at least virtually or, "almost" emulate the lifestyle of the rich and famous  and, therefore, start rejecting the strictures that adherence to religious commandments impose and embrace the looser and more accepting  brand of whatever works, whatever makes you happy.....and, enterprising "churches" started adapting their "brands", mushrooming evangelists started popping up.  And, at the same time you had media starting to affect morals and mores many families more than tradition and parenting.... and commercialism and materialism running the engines of that determined where time was spent....church takes time...efficiency became king....keeping morals intact in a social system takes keeing a social system intact....we are a very mobile society...well, I'll shut up now.  Muslims seem to me to have more of the same intact features that Christianity used to have going for it - tradition, family structure, less materialism, etc....sorry to keep blathering.

This is what I wanted to come back to. I'm sure you wanted comments related to

your closing lines but.... Many reasons for the decline. People see judgment and

war affiliated with religion. Also, more people are going to college than ever before,

so students are being taught that faith is connected with the supernatural.

I don't like it any more than you do Naut.. I'm afraid I love the traditonal forms of worship.  There's nothing like that tingle on the back of your neck that comes from the combination of an old church (with centuries of prayer absorbed into its walls), an organ and (hopefully) beautiful harmonies from the choir.  But then I'm not young, and perhaps we are not 'reaching' young people in quite the right way.

I really want to say a lot here, but a foggy head won't seem to let me know where to begin and how to say what i want to say.  Maybe I'll try again later.

As a Catholic, who has not attended any other service that he remembers (the Presbyterian Sunday school I attended Id o not remember much about the service), I can definitely see how and why people are being bored. Go to one Mass and one has seen them all.

i don't like fire and brimstone ...scaring the masses into religion to keep them in line...Yes I always state that I am a Christian but I certainly don't belong in a Church...you can't really see me baking cakes for a stall or joining the "Ladies AiD" Lol...

Churches have to stop about buildings everyone you join has a building fun the first thing you are told about or else once I was asked to help make the morning Tea!!! I find God my own quiet way. No Fire and terror won't fill Churches.
