Kabu

Loved this post.  I was raised on stories from the Great Depression by parents who were raised during it, and I've written about the hoarding habits still evident.  My dad's family lifed in Fort Worth, in the middle of a city intersection...my mom on a farm; his family was very poor but not in a crime infested area...my mom's dad had run away from his wealthy family in Canada and lived hand-and-mouth, self-educated himself and made a life for himself and my grandmother in Texas, then died but had life insurance so my mom wasn't as poor as many of her friends on her farm in North Texas. My husband's father was an Arkansas hillbilly who ran away from home at 12 and worked on one of the work programs, telling him horrible tales of poverty.  Yes...such a short time ago...I wonder how people would survive today?

Sounds a bit like my dad used to say his life was like when he was young, carrying ice up hill both ways.

But, does give some perspective.  Many Many people have it worse than I do.  I feel bad for complaining.  Maybe when I feel better I will just get lost in the everyday grind of things.

I guess it was pretty much like that in a lot of places Kabu. We all have such short memories, but of course for it to be in really cold places would have added to the agony.

I must read it of course, it is good to be reminded that times could be worse and still are for a lot of folk. How is the new book coming on?

Nothing like reading about abject misery to take your mind off

the winter gloom...   I do hope there was an upbeat ending.
