I believe my wife once told me that her parents used to have a washer/ringer just like that at one time ( where it ended up she has no idea ). But you have to admit, throwing your wash into a machine with some detergent, pushing a button and walking away is much, much better . . .

I remember a similar piece of machinery, but I never paid much attention to it, nor do I recall what day of the week it was put to work...

Great story! It made me smile. And the washer looks familiar. I think my great Aunt Dotsy may have had one of those!

We had a washer like that, state of the art technology in the late '40s.
Almost every time I throw a load in the washer & dryer, I think about how much easier it is these days to accomplish those mundane tasks. As for that photo - I've got one just like that in my basement - free to anyone who's willing to lug it up the cellar steps...

All I remember is a mangle with rubber cylinders until one day my Dad acquired a large one with wooden rollers and an electric copper. I just hang my clothes on the top of the stairs usually after the machine has washed them they dry quickly for some unknown reason/

My four sons are old enough that I did cloth diapers for them (seven years total) in a Maytag wringer washing machine and hanging them out on the line to dry for the first couple of those years. Then we got a dryer but I still used the wringer washer for years.

I used one of those and don't even want to remember it. My mother insisted on starching and ironing the sheets and pillow cases. We never seemed to be finished with washing and ironing. You have so many stories about growing up in a very different place and wonderful ones.
